Stewart is Prior’s mentor and he worked with Knott during his rise through the ranks. It is hard to believe that when England toured here five years ago Prior was not selected and considered behind Tim Ambrose and Phil Mustard. Prior paid tribute to Steven Finn, a player picking up compliments during this Test series for his batting rather than his bowling. Now nicknamed the 'Watford Wall' by his team-mates after his match-saving innings in Dunedin, Finn played a few more shots here, adding 83 in 19 overs with Prior just as England looked to be losing the advantage. There was a lot said about his innings in the last Test but it was a slightly different situation today," said Prior. "But again he stepped up and it is so important those guys put in those contributions. Even if he is just batting time to allow the other guy to score runs, it is so vitalBut now he is the team’s vice-captain and engine of the batting line-up, playing another selfless innings for his side before falling in the pursuit of quick runs rather than play for the century within his reach. As far as I am concerned those guys are legends of the game and I have a long way to go before I class myself alongside them," he said. "Fingers crossed, maybe one day I might be able to say 'yes I had a good influence on the team.It is not the way I play. I try and read the situation as best I can and that is all that is important to me - making sure the team is in the right position," he said. "I would be a liar if I didn’t say I walked off thinking I needed only 18 runs for a Test century. They don’t come along that often but getting those runs quickly at the end of the innings was what I was trying to do. It didn’t come off.
